New to Streamdeck: use Elgato software or BetterTouchTool?

I finally bought a StreamDeck … the Neo was too hard to resist when it went on sale.

Before I start setting it up in earnest … any recommendations as to whether I should use the Elgato software or BetterTouchTool?

I have tried BTT with my Streamdeck XL a while back and was pretty impressed with the feature set and all the possibilities it offered.

However in the end I found it too complex for me to setup and with all the littler things and knobs to handle, so I switched back to the Elgato Software. While not perfect I find it good and easy enough for me, I like the possibilities with the community add-ons. If I was to name one feature that brought me back to the Elgato app I’d say it is the automatic return from inside a folder to the higher level.

Also I found BTT a bit unreliable as it sometimes wouldn’t activate on my Streamdeck until I restarted BTT. That was months ago so maybe that quirk is fixed by now …

So currently I’m satisfied with the Elgato app - not a fan of the necessity to create an Elgato account for using their store for plugins and the like - even when they are free …

Skip BTT and get Keyboard Maestro and prepare to be amazed.

It’s mind-numbingly shocking how awesome KM made StreamDeck so useful.

I find that BTT and Keyboard Maestro compliment each other very well.

Back to the original topic, controling it with Elgato software or BTT: the primary differentiator to me was the flexibility BTT offers.

With Elgato, every “screen” displays a single profile. But with BTT I can have multiple profiles showing at once. For instance I have three buttons at the bottom to manage the system volume. I configure those once in a single profile that shows alongside every other profile.

If I’m in a video meeting, I’ve got a mic mute button next to those. If I’m streaming a video, I also show video control buttons alongside those.

It turns out that there’s much much more that you can do, but this was enough to help me choose.
