No confidence in 26

A prompt this morning to update to “iOS 26.3.1 (a)” doesn’t add confidence.

I assume (a) refers to a security patch but further ingrains the narrative that the 26 releases are as bad as iOS 13

I am no fan of everything “26” has brought to the table, but I am very happy that they finally have integrated a mechanism for security fixes without the need to release a big OS update.

This release is the first time Apple has pushed a security fix through its new Background Security Improvements feature, which is used to deliver small out-of-band patches outside the normal security update cycle.

This is how it should be done. The other option is to wait and release security fixes bundled with new OS versions. This is how they have done it before - which means that they took more time until they fixed security flaws. And this is not how things work in 2026…

The first installment of iOS 26 contained 40 security updates (if I counted correctly). iOS 18 contained more. As Apple devices grew in popularity, they became bigger targets. Eventually Apple announced a bug bounty in 2016.

Today every update Apple issues with security patches is detailed in the "About the security content of . . . " page linked in the update.

Find, fix, and report. That’s all I expect from any software developer.

Makes sense if you’ve already downgraded to 26 but not as a Lock Screen notification.

Maybe I’m just too influenced by other podcasts where hosts are sticking to ios18 and fiercely critical of the “fisher price” look of the 26 release, MacOS window sizing, UI transparency, MacOS menu bar icons and the rest.

I’m all for fixing bugs and not expecting them to reverse course but disappointed not to see a course correction in recent releases.

I can’t help thicking that the podcast hosts that I listen to all listen to each other and create an echo chamber. I feel thay are all veteran users of Macs (as I am by the way) and are just stuck in the mud. I like many of the new visual effects in Tahoe. I occasionally run into things that are visually “difficult” but this situation seems to be improving as the OS is refined. I perceive this whole thing as being overblown.

But is hard to resolve arguments about aesthetic decisions. From my experience, I would not be “fearful” of Tahoe.
