I just discovered Notenik yesterday, and I’m already deep down the rabbit hole of customization and setting it up to match my workflow.

For background, I’ve used just about every note taking app available for the Mac. I used DEVONthink for a long time, but it’s overkill for what I need. I’ve gone the other direction and built out custom Vimwiki workflows in Vim. I’ve used everything in between, and what I realized what I actually wanted was a replacement for VoodooPad.
VoodooPad was a fantastic Mac desktop wiki, but when Gus sold it, it never really recovered. Then apps like Obsidian and Craft ate its lunch. I’ve tried both, Craft is interesting, but it’s got a weird text editing model, and I’d need to stay subscribed to keep access to my data. Obsidian and its ilk are Electron apps, and that I just cannot abide.
Notenik so far ticks all the boxes for me. Open formats (data ownership), native Swift Mac-assed Mac app, very customizable, and it’s a passion project of an indie developer. Speaking of, the developer has been active here for years, and is very responsive in his own forum.
The app is free on the [Mac App Store](Notenik App - App Store Notenik), and the source code is on Github. Highly recommend checking it out.
