On the iPad, how do I get rid of multiple icons at the bottom of the screen when switching to an app?

I find it very annoying to see all these everytime I open mail on the iPad.

Those are other Mail windows you’ve somehow opened. Flick up on the non-dimmed ones (i.e. everything but the rightmost current window) to get rid of them. If you want to keep those windows around, unfortunately, you can’t prevent them from briefly appearing when you activate Mail.
