Open Source RSS Reader

I was just about to pull the trigger on Reeder and thought I’d look at open source options one last time.

I had looked several times before with little luck. Lots of cross-platform stuff, where the mac was afterthought.

Then I stumbled across Vienna and so far it has exceeded my expectations.

Initial thoughts and observations:

  • Native Mac app written in Objective-C & Swift.
  • Active project with regular updates.
  • Nice modern interface with extensive preferences.
  • Easy to install as an .app file or via Homebrew.
  • XML based plugin system.
  • Open Source License under Apache 2.0.
  • No corporate entity or premium features requiring any type of purchase or subscription.

I wanted to like Vienna but I haven’t been able to figure out a way to only show feeds with unread items. However it does allow you to set a default RSS reader in the preferences so that’s a plus and the reason I keep it around.

Speaking of RSS, I saw this post and felt compelled to comment because I’ve subscribed to the latest topics feed for the forum: https://talk.macpowerusers.com/latest.rss
