Open Source Software for macOS NOT in brew

Hi

I almost never install open source software that isn’t in Homebrew Core and Cask. How do you handle that? For me, it’s a quality endorsement when the software has been packaged by the brew project.

example: Immich Desktop — Immich for macOS, right in Finder

brew install --cask kartax/tap/immich-desktop

Brew has very basic requirements that the software will load. It has nothing to do with quality and/or security.

Not to step in the quality endorsement of proper “official” homebrew packages, but casks are a different beast, you are basically downloading anything from anyone who has taken the time to build a public Github repo with a specific set of files that Homebrew can read and download. So be careful there. Newer homebrew installations specifically ask you to “trust” a cask repository.

Do you not find that managing a brew installation is a bit more time consuming than simply doing a direct download? For example, for me, these two have brew installations: Handbrake, LaTeXiT. But, the direct downloads are just so much easier to oversee.

Granted, some time ago, brew installation of python seemed more pleasant than doing a direct download. But python is no longer in my list of needed tools.

And, indeed if Homebrew has an app and that app is also available for direct download (e.g. as a dmg), why bother with brew install???

Homebrew offers auto-updating for both itself and apps, as well as easy ways to list everything you’ve installed and quickly re-install that same batch of apps when you’re migrating computers.
