I’ve been using my original HomePod as a speaker for my TV. It works well, but I’d like to add a 2nd speaker to have stereo. Would a HomePod mini work well with the original HomePod or would they be imbalanced since one is so much bigger than the other?

Even if you could pair them, the sound quality difference is significant, so I doubt you’d be satisfied.
In my experience the HomePod pair in our bedroom sounds superior than the HomePod mini pair I tried. The audio was much clearer for spoken word at lower levels than the mini’s. We also use HomePods in the Kitchen/Dining room/Living room (open floor plan design) to great success.
My only wish would be to add a third HomePod outside on the covered deck.
