I just updated my MacOS and iOS to the latest version 26 (nice to actually have these numbers unified BTW) and noticed iphone mirroring is way more solid and responsive than before the update. Startup/connection is zippy and controls seem snappier and more accurate using my Macbook’s trackpad.
This feature may finally be usable!
For some context, I was pretty excited to finally not have to reach for my iPhone for those times when an app wasn’t available/usable on desktop/web but that excitement was quickly squashed by the fact that the mirroring was so laggy and unresponsive. I just ended up using iphone mirroring only when I absolutely needed.
I also used to have a lot of broken/failed connections mac-iphone that I hope have been eliminated for good with this update.
I like iPhone Mirroring, but with the previous versions it seem to work great for a while, then it would just stop working. I’d go through a litany of power off/on, finger crossing, etc. But I never found exactly what caused it to stop/start working again.
Not going to happen any time soon, as Apple runs the risk of being forced to open that to any competing mobile vendor --that would be Android, of course. Probably there are technical reasons why that would be a very complicated feature to achieve without creating a big hole in macOS security layer but it’s probably due to force pressure in the EU.
I am usually all for these Euro directives and whatnot, but Apple has all the right to refuse to do it.
