Some software providers have managed to do it. Omni are a prime example. You have to have the old version installed when you go to pay for the new version. Look under In App Purchases

Iā€™m not surprised that TapBots was a little off-putting and unwilling to make an upgrade that way. Their ā€˜design languageā€™ has always seemed a little aggressive to me, too, but theyā€™re also a two-person shop with, what I assume are, razor thin margins. Iā€™m not sure Iā€™ll use it for $39, and I may just pay a monthly subscription for a little bit, but, personally, I think itā€™s important to support indie developers if we really like good and good-looking software.

I just posted on MPU the other day about my app Text Catalyst: Text Catalyst: Clipboard Manager & Text Expander

Text Catalyst doesnā€™t share the same feature set. But I do like the fact that my app has much bigger history limit (48,000 vs 1,500).
