The red - yellow - green buttons are greyed out in all applications.
I did a reboot but cant figure this one out in Big Sur.
Any suggestions are welcome.

This can happen is you’ve selected the gray option in System Preferences as per the screenshot. Select any other colour option and that should go away.
I tried that but did not work.
Wil give it another go an restart the machine.
