Recast: How do I define an abbreviation for a favorite, like “hl” for Highlights? I know I’ve done it in the past but can’t figure it out again. Nothing in the Manual that I could find.
To do text replacement in macOS, follow these steps:
- Open System Settings on your Mac.
- Click on “Keyboard” in the left navigation bar.
- Click the “Text Replacement…” button.
- Click on the “+” button at the bottom left of the window.
- In the “Replace” field, type the text that you want to replace (e.g. “btw”).
- In the “With” field, type the text that you want to replace it with (e.g. “by the way”).
- Click on “Add” to save your text replacement.
Now, whenever you type the text you specified in the “Replace” field, it will automatically be replaced with the text you entered in the “With” field. This can be very helpful for commonly used phrases or for correcting common typos. You can add as many text replacements as you need by repeating these steps.

Do you mean Raycast? Is it text expansion you’re trying to do (e.g. type hl
and have it expand to Highlights
), or do you want to assign keywords to applications?
Oops, yeah, RAYCAST. I have defined the app Hioghlights as a Favorite. Previously I’ve defined TextSoap as a Favorite and given it the abbreviation “ts.” That shows up in a box next to the full name. I’ve forgotten. how to do it, but I want to define “hl” to refer to Highlights.
Go to the settings dialog and open the “extensions” tab. It has an alias column for every command, extension, application etc.
