You are correct; the output of a map can look similar. However, the way they get there is quite different.
To be fair, I use Scapple an awful lot - I love it - but CMap is a specialist map maker, and as such, it has quite a few additional features that Scapple doesn’t. A few examples include setting style templates, curved lines, and the ability to annotate and output different file types. If you are interested in seeing more, you might find their help page useful. You can quickly see what the app can do.
I only use mind mapping for brainstorming, and Scapple does a much better job of duplicating mind mapping on a blank sheet of paper than apps like Mindnode.
I probably should be trying to use Canvas in Obsidian as an alternative, but when I want to brainstorm I’m in a hurry. Scapple is simple and frictionless, and I don’t want to take the time to learn a different way of doing things, which I’m otherwise usually very open to.
