Reduce Eye Strain with Paperman for Mac

I just discovered an app called Paperman on Setapp (it’s also available on the Mac App Store). It adds a customizable paper-like texture to your screen (or screens) that can make it easier to read.

I’ve been impressed so far. Sometimes I find that too much white staring back at me can contribute to eye strain. I can see using Paperman at least part of the time, especially when doing text-based work such as emails (and this post :).

It’s a thoughtfully designed app with plenty of options to customize it to your liking. For example, I set a global keyboard shortcut to toggle Paperman on and off and automatically disabled it in specific apps (e.g. Photos and Photomator).

I’m sharing this in case others find it helpful. I look forward to hearing your impressions.

Running it now! Will let you know once I’ve had some time with it.

That version (€7,99) apparently has a limitation:

Please note: Apps in full screen mode aren’t supported on the Mac App Store version due to technical limitations.

There’s also a direct purchase (€9,99 + local taxes) on their website.

They currently have a “Back to School” sale with 35% off (“ends in 20 days”).

But they don’t have a trial version and I don’t have Setapp… :frowning:

Thanks for the heads-up on the Mac App Store limitation, @rob. I confirmed that full-screen works as expected in the Setapp version.

I see that the dev offers a “14-day money-back guarantee” if you purchase from them directly.

I have been using Paperman for a week now and I have started to use Apple Notes again. Previously I found the background of a note too harsh in light mode with the only alternative theme being dark mode and I don’t want to run dark mode systemwide. Paperman has made using Apple Notes a far less jarring experience for me.

I was intrigued by this app when Setapp added it so I tried it and yeah - same here - I find it is a nice app to run during the work day as it definitely reduces eye strain. I have it on all the default settings except the intensity at 13%.
