Remapping modifier keys on Logitech Pebble K380S Bluetooth keyboard

Hi Friends,
I had to replace my Logitech K380 Bluetooth keyboard (spilled coffee, boo hoo) and received a Pebble K380S to replace it. It’s over 2x more expensive than the one I bought 3 years ago. :frowning: So I opted for the $10 cheaper Windows model, naively thinking that the only difference would be button labels. WRONG. On the lower left of the keyboard it’s ctrl, fn, opt, cmd. I’d like to remap the ctrl and fn keys so it’s fn, ctrl, opt, cmd. While Settings>keyboard modifiers on my MacBook Air running 15.7.2 Sequoia lists the Pebble and allows me to remap the ctrl key, it lists a globe key but no fn key. Remapping the globe to ctrl didn’t do anything, so obviously the fn and global keys are different.

I’d appreciate any advice about how to fix this.

One last thing: any advice about changing key caps so I can have the Mac key icons rather than the Windows + Mac names?

Thanks!

Try the free program Karabiner Elements. It allows you to do all sorts of key mapping, from simple substitutions (e.g. swapping two keys around, to complex macros, such as tapping Caps Lock for Escape and holding it down for Control). The basic features are really easy to use, and it includes a program to tell you which key is being pressed – helpful for your case of distinguishing Fn from Globe.

It’s a brilliant program – it’s one of the first things I install on every Mac.

Agreed, I use Karabiner to change the home / end keys on my Logi MX Mechanical to behave properly.

Thanks! Does KE allow you to change on an external keyboard while leaving things the same on the laptop itself?

Yes, you can exclude from modify all events and simple events can be keyboard specific.

As @aardy says, yes, you can have separate settings for different keyboards.

BTW, Karabiner can do an awful lot of very clever things, which means it can get a bit complicated.

When you first start out, just concentrate on the simple modifications. E.g. here I’m using the dropdown keys to swap Fn (globe) for another key.

When you’re happy with that, then on the Complex Modifications tab, you’ll find a button Add predefined rules, which takes you to a website with hundreds of user-defined modifications. I use the following ones, all of which I ‘borrowed’ from that site…

Outside of these solutions, can you exchange it for the Mac version?

Wow! This is awesome! Thanks for taking the time. I’ll definitely check this out—you’ve opened a door for me.

I definitely thought of this right away. But for some weird reason the Mac version costs $10 more, and that bugs me.

I guess it comes down to what bugs you more, the windows keyboard or the $10. :grinning:

Looks like I might be spending the extra $10 after all: under “Current Limitations”, Karabiner Elements documentation says “Karabiner Elements cannot modify the fn key on non-Apple keyboards such as Logitech keyboards.” Oh well, thanks to @brookter I’ll find other things to try.

Ah, sorry about that, @Pommette… I wasn’t aware of that limitation.

if you have ‘better mouse’, you can look at that for keyboard modifications too.
