I am looking for a good running race pace calculator app for iOS. I’ve tried a few, but what I really want is an app that will let me say “if I run a half marathon, and I run the first 7 km at pace X, and the last 2 km at pace Y, how fast will I need the 12.1 km in the middle if I want to finish with time Z?” I know I could work this out by hand, but it would be really nice to have an app, so I could easily play around with different combinations. All the apps I’ve tried just tell you the overall pace you need to maintain to finish by a certain time. I’d welcome any app recommendations.
I use a lot of running apps and websites, but I don’t know a single one that allows you to compute a varying pace for your race. I know you are looking for one that does, not my anecdotal response that “I don’t know of one.” I just think this may not be out there. Maybe it’s because most recommendations are to stick to a uniform pace?
I see how this would be helpful, though. For the use case you described. Or, if you fall behind, it might be nice to be able to compute your “catch-up” pace. Or if you want to run a uniform pace until you blast it into overdrive with a strong kick or a really swift final 5k of your half marathon.
I’ll doublecheck the tools that I use to see if there is anything that might fit the bill for you.
Thanks, I appreciate it. After a bit more searching, I have found a few websites like this one that do negative split calculations, which is almost what I am looking for, although not exactly.
It sounds like a great use for Shortcuts. Add the Initial pace, closing pace and the distance of the race and it’ll calculate.
You could even add the Initial distance and closing distance to be entered manually to make it even more extensible for different distances.
I know it’s the not the answer you’re looking for, but this is the type of simple-yet-multi-stepped computation that I’ve had really great luck using ChatGPT for.
Like you, I would love a sort of Apple-first “Running Toolkit” app comparable to some of the Guitar apps, etc. that incorporate multiple calculators and tools for runners. Even things like converting km pace to mile pace when talking to my American running friends is more annoying than it has to be.
It’s funny you mentioned that. i have a basic pace calculating shortcut, and I was looking to see about modifying it to accomplish what @ethanweed is looking for. I’m going to experiment tonight.
Do that as V2 and then you can add some mods to take account of the gradient of the hills in V3.
