With Prime Day in full swing, does anyone have any experience with this monitor?
Interestingly that “Frequently Returned Item” is highlighted on the page BUT for $399…
SAMSUNG 32-Inch M8 (M80D) Series 4K UHD Smart Monitor
There is no way I’d buy a smart monitor. Are you ever planning to watch something on it without a connected computer? I bet a lot of returns are related to that.
I have the 32’’ M7, which I got in a similar sale from Amazon. The “smart” capabilities include watching Youtube, Netflix and similar or connecting to MS Office 365 without a computer. It supports Airplay, USB-C charging and other stuff to the point that I cannot imagine what else could I ask for in a monitor that is not an Apple Studio Display.
Image quality is not mind-bending so probably not terribly useful for professional photo or video edition, but for regular desktop work or programming is not bad at all. And it’s big, and it’s not expensive. Would buy again.
Personally I’d be looking for a non smart monitor, that is if you don’t want to use the smart features.
I need to keep the remote handy, to dismiss the regular “we’ve updated our terms” and other things that pop-up unexpectedly. I also have a strange issue where I need to force (by configuration with remote) the monitor to remember that a specific input source is a “PC”, else the refresh rate seems to drop to the point where my mouse movement is so laggy.
The overall Tizen operating system is so woeful, and also the hardware is underpowered for it, I can’t even watch 4k streams with my streaming apps so gave up on any smart feature use a long time ago and just plug in a 4k Apple TV when required.
Also upon initial MacBook connection, the monitor is slow to show an image, can take 15-20 seconds at times. My other Lenovo 27" 4k monitor is straight on every time.
Once you get through the above, the monitor isn’t so bad if you ditch the stand and get a reasonable monitor arm. However the fact you need to keep a remote handy to just use the monitor can’t be understated in terms of annoyance.
If Samsung offered a “just be a monitor” mode, this would go a long way to fixing the issues.
However for the money, it’s not a crowded peer group. Would be nice if Apple released a 32" update to the Studio Display, that was only about 2x the price of other similar spec’d monitors.
Thanks all for your comments, and to your point @cornchip I would not be using
any of the “smart” features, the video (thanks @Hoppel) says no VESA,
Chat GPT told me it did .
Are you using a VESA with this @SteveMac?
SO, I will wait for the (soon to be refreshed??) Studio Display
BUT with a “would buy again” from @pantulis, I’m still thinking.
2026, according to Mark Gurman, earlier today:
Agreed.
