ScanSnap Home v3

New to this community. Joined because I can’t find a lot of human support for ScanSnap on Mac. This forum seems to cover it, at least a bit. So here I am … Wondering specifically if there’s anyone here who’s got the new ScanSnap Home version worked out.

I upgraded to it with the usual fear and trembling that accompanies anything to do with new OS’s or software versions involving ScanSnap and Mac. It’s actually worked out just fine, and everything works as with v2.x - except one feature. I’m referring to the menubar app . The scanning profiles used to be listed under it as a simple dropdown menu. Now they’re gone from there. All I have is:

The profiles aren’t GONE-gone. I can still select them in the scan window. So it’s not a disaster. I can live with it, if that’s how it’s meant to be. But I’m hoping it’s not, and can be fixed. Switching profile through the menubar is infinitely more efficient.

So just wondering / hoping someone might know a fix for this behaviour. ScanSnap support is … well let’s not go there.

That is weird. My Scansnap Home instance was changed back in April and updated to 2.23.1. I was not even aware of v3. Interestingly enough, checking for updates via AutoOnlineUpdater does not show 3.0 for me.

The release notes do not mention the menu bar:

https://www.pfu.ricoh.com/imaging/ss_hist/en/mac/index.html

But that, of course, does not mean very much.

2.23.1 still is showing the profiles right from the menubar like you are describing.

I have no idea. :person_shrugging:

I was able to find the direct download link for 2.23.1, just in case if you want to try a downgrade in order to check if the profiles are coming back in your menubar:

AFAIK ScanSnap Home V3 won’t work with my old iX500 scanner, although people are reporting it working. I haven’t tried it yet. Note that the old V2 is Intel code, so has life more limited than my iX500!

Anyway, back to the original question, it just looks like the removed all the profile stuff from the dropdown. This certainly simplifies it. As for functionality, just opening up the iX500 lid causes the Scan window to open, so at least for the way I’m using it, there has never been a need or any time savings to using the profile settings in the menubar.

Thanks for replies so far. And …

Update:
Surprise! I actually got a prompt reply from the Australian scansnap support agent. (Never before!) He confirmed that, yes, v3 doesn’t support accessing profiles in the menubar. And confirmed he’ll raise it with PFU support for comment, and tell me what they say.

He also drew my attention to a new (?) feature (which may perhaps be an intended replacement for the menubar profiles?). It’s a setting under Preferences/General: “Show the scan window automatically when the ScanSnap is turned on

That was available before. @tomalmy has mentioned it above.

That is due to the setting you are referring to.

Thank you for following up and providing information about PFU support’s answer!

I am still using ScanSnap Manager even though it is not supported. Frankly, I am concerned that ScanSnap Home will not support my current work flow especially be able to direct scans to DevonThink, Evernote, Mail or to a folder. What has your experience been?

At least V2 will direct to DevonThink, Mail, and Folder. I don’t use Evernote, but it is an available choice so I assume it will work. I use scan to folder and to printer almost all of the time. I never have it scan to ScanSnap Home, which is the installation default. You can add destination apps if they aren’t in the supplied list.

My workflow is pretty basic. e.g. I’e never used DevonThink or Evernote. But I have had one successful scan-to-email. So no problems with that.

Yep. I don’t use ScanSnap Home as the scan destination either. Everything goes to ~/Downloads where a suite of Hazel rules redirect it as appropriate.

Oh ok. I’d just never used it, so didn’t know. I think I’d still prefer the menubar method. But I’ll probably get used to the other one.

:ok_hand:

I was able to get the version 3.1 of Scansnap to work with my IX500 despite it being officially unsupported.

It’s unfortunate that the software is still not Universal for Apple Silicon yet.

Really? After all these years. That was the only reason to go to V3 was for Apple Silicon native code.

Hi everyone,

As the creator of the thread, I’m returning as promised to report the response of the good people at PFU Support (received via the Australian support agent):

The engineering team reported that this is the specification for ScanSnap Home V3.
The feature for profile settings has revised to make it simpler.
Apologize to those who have been using this feature frequently, but this improvement is intended to make it easier to use ScanSnap Home.

My response, as I said to the local guy: Personally I’m disappointed. I don’t see why they couldn’t provide both and let the user choose. But never mind. I’m sure I’ll get used to it.

So there it is…
