Screen recording applications

I do not see a recent post on this. I was listening to recent MPU podcasts and did not realize there was an issue with Screenflow. It’s been my screenrecorder of choice for years but apparently it hasn’t been updated for awhile.
David is using Screen Studio but has to do post-production in Final Cut Pro. I’ve heard mention of Loom, but their website turned me off (Chrome Extension, vs download etc etc)

I want to create a series of short tutorials for my successor (retiring this year). What is the best option that doesn’t require a huge learning curve? (I have many many applications I want to learn in retirement and this is not one of them

I recently discoverd ⌘⇧5 in stanadrd macOS although I’ve been a Mac user for 2+ decades now. It records what is on the screen obviously and with judicious changes in settings can record your voice over too. (I use Blackhole to route speaker output to sound input when capture training videos.)

You could try CleanShot X or ScreenPal. Both are good choices because of their ease of use and sufficient functionality for creating basic tutorials.
If you need something more advanced, Snagit is another option that offers a good balance of functionality and simplicity.

+1 for the built-in function (Cmd-Shift-5). Already there, and works great in my experience. CleanShot X seems to be the current darling in this space, but might be overkill unless you plan on using it for additional purposes later.

I think it’s worth mentioning that if you plan to create a lot of these videos for your successor, you should consider file sizes.

The built-in (Cmd-Shift-5) creates large MOV files.

Good point! My sister is a fan of Loom—I may give it another shot.

⌘⇧5 is hard to beat. I choose HEVC when exporting to keep the file size smaller.
If it’s a longer recording, I run it through Handbrake to compress it even further into an MP4.
