Sidecar Knowledge

I just bought a M4Pro MacMini. Very nice little machine! It’s now the fastest computer I own.

With that in mind, I want to use the screen on my M1Pro MacBookPro in sidecar mode to give me extra screen real estate. But when I turn it on using Sidecar, the MacBookPro screen goes into 16:9 ratio rather than the native 16:10 ratio. The M4 letterboxes the screen on the M1. The native resolutions don’t even show up as options when I go in to try and change it.

Does anyone know if there’s a way to get Sidecar to use the whole screen? Is this the proper behavior?

I’ve done a ton of the usual Google stuff. No solutions there. I tried an apple called BetterDisplay, but it also couldn’t dig up the native resolutions over sidecar.

Here’s the other odd thing, when I do it the other way around (M1 Sidecar into the M4), I get letterboxes on the M4 monitor and can’t access the full resolution of my M4’s monitor. That monitor is a pretty standard 1920x1200 resolution display.

If anyone here knows a work around or what the deal is, I’d appreciate some input. I’d like to use the full screen on every monitor I use!

Thanks in advance.

I didn’t think that Macs support using another Mac for Sidecar, that’s only iPad.

You may be thinking of Universal Control, but that doesn’t allow you to use the Mac Mini on the MBP, it allows you to use one Keyboard and Mouse across multiple computers and drag content between them.

I suspect you’re actually using airplay display mirroring to another mac? No helpful suggestions sorry, just trying to nail down the actual situation.

As an aside, I think that tech is mostly based on the assumption that the target device is a TV, so basically forcing 16:9 on you isn’t all that surprising.

I agree. Sidecar would retain each system’s screen on its own display but allow you to control it using the mouse and keyboard from the other device. What is described here is using airplay to another mac, not sidecar.

I have a vague recollection that back when the notched displays first came out, some reviews noted that when airplaying to the notched display, it would letterbox to avoid the notch. I suspect that is what is going on here. There is no workaround. But then again, I could be misremembering that.
