Slack dropping iOS 12 support... Alternatives?

Since Glassboard shut down we have been using Slack within my family. Unfortunately Slack will drop iOS 12 support on September 1, which means we need to look for an alternative again.

Must have

  • Sharing text
  • Sharing pictures
  • Sharing URL’s
  • User mentioning (@username)
  • iOS App
  • Android App
  • iOS 12 support (iPhone 6, iPad Air)

Nice to have

  • Text formatting
  • Post editing
  • End-to-end encryption
  • Local backups
  • Windows App
  • Web App

Showstopper

  • No Facebook product/service
  • No Google product/service

I’m currently investigating Signal, but maybe Apple’s Messages will do?

What do you use/recommend?

Is just not upgrading your apps an option, until you roll your devices forward?

I mean, everything back to the iPhone 6s supports newer iOS versions. Are you planning any upgrades in the next couple years?

Did not think of that…

However, I don’t think it’s possible to exclude a single App from auto-updating on iOS?

If the app doesn’t support iOS 12, but the device is still on iOS 12, then slack won’t update.

How about teams?
Microsoft have just released a personal version, not sure if you need an 365 sub or not though.
Requires iOS 12.2 and above.

Teams would be the more equivalent app to Slack and you don’t need a 365 sub.

Apple’s messages won’t work for android. Signal would be a good use.

It seems like you’re mixing use of a messaging app and something more when your nice to haves include text formatting and post editing

At work we use both Slack and Teams, but somehow we use Teams only for online meetings, so I had not considered this… Will investigate!

Those are features in Slack I use; that’s how they ended up on the list.

Quill Chat

Quill is backed by one of the same VC partners.

It looks like a potential Slack replacement.

Was kind of curious about your question and saw this list

The one that jumps out at me is discord. That would be an interesting use.

Don’t know most of these…

From a trusted player or end-to-end encrypted / open source might become more important then…

True, but will SlackHQ still allow that App to connect to their service?

I would think it would depend on whether the app version is also deprecated.

Slack’s OS announcement basically means they won’t release new versions for iOS 12 - not that iOS 12 will immediately stop working.

Now I’m just sad about Glassboard all over again

Is Slack on the web an option?
