Sonoma: Fujitsu Scanner

I have two Fujitsu Scanners
S1500M
S1300
MacBook Pro 16" Intel 2019 attached to the S1500M
MacMini M2 Attached to S1300
Both of these Macs run Sonoma.
I cannot get either to work. Downloaded the most recent software for both from now Ricoh which apparently bought out Fujitsu. There is a failure at the step to detect the USB connection on both setups.
These machines have been workhorses. There have been repeated software issues with the hardware cast into varying degrees of limbo.

Throwing away functioning hardware because of lack of software updates is depressing. My S1500M most recently had been functioning on a 2014 iMac running Catalina but that iMac finally died. Similarly, the S1300 was running on Catalina with a 2011 iMac which still works but I replaced with the new MacMini. I do not have the physical room in my life to dedicate a 2011 iMac to the sole task of scanning.

Is anybody successfully using these Fujitsu scanners with Sonoma? Any hints? Source for alternate software?

I’ve not upgraded to Sonoma yet (on Ventura) but I suggest you give ExactScan a try (they’ve got a free trial). I use the pro version on an old Fujitsu S510M workhorse that’s no longer supporter – works great!

Thanks for this tip. I will keep an eye on them. Their website only talks about being updated to Ventura.

I may wait until (if) they say that they are upgraded to Sonoma. I do not want to “waste” a free trial on software that the company does not even claim to work on Sonoma.

I certainly hope this will ultimately be a solution. I would be very interested if someone out there is successfully using Exact Scan with Sonoma.

I have a S1300 running under Sonoma, but on M1-Mac.
Software: ScanSnap Home 2.12.0 (8).

I have a SnapSnap S1300i scanner with ScanSnap Home 2.12.0 (8). Sonoma 14.1. Works fine. I had no problems at all, even with Sonoma dev betas. Sorry but I don’t have any suggestions for you.

I have an older one. Connecting via USB worked, wireless didn’t. Don’t forget to reboot the Mac after wiring up.

Is ExactScan native or does it run off Rosetta?
Been waiting for a native solution.

It’s still Intel – but it runs great on my M1 Mac Mini.

I’ve just upgraded to Sonoma on both a MBP Pro M1 and a Mac Studio M2 Max and the (free) Fujitsu Scansnap Manager seems to work fine with a Fujitsu ScanSnap S510M, which I bought sometime about 2008, I think, though it could be a couple of years after that.

The original drivers stopped working some time ago, of course, but I’ve found that the ScanSnap Manager software still works, even though officially it’s only to be used for much newer scanners. TBH, I can’t actually remember the URL on the Fujitsu site where I downloaded it (this time I just used Time Machine to transfer the apps over), but looking at the ‘About’ screen it’s Version 7.2.L60.

If you follow the link in the screenshot you’ll eventually get to the dedicated ScanSnap site, where it says that ScanSnap Manager will be deprecated in favour of ScanSnap Home (which I’ve never tried): ScanSnap Manager - ScanSnap

It lists these as compatible scanners: iX1600, iX1500¹, iX1400, iX1300, S1300i, iX100, S1100i, SV600. Discontinued Scanner Models²: iX500, S1500, S1500M, S1300 and S1100

But as you see, it’s still working with paleolithic models like my S510M…

Hope this gives you sometime to try, anyway.

(BTW, my use of ScanSnap is very limited – I simply scan things into Devonthink, so I can’t vouch for every feature working – but it’s still working for what I need.)

I can confirm that ScanSnap Manager V7.2L60 works on my M1 MacBook MacBook Pro Max, recently updated to macOS Sonoma. Note: this is Snap Manager, not ScanSnap Home (which I have never used).

I used this direct link to download ScanSnap Manager:
https://www.pfu.ricoh.com/global/scanners/scansnap/dl/mac-ssinst2-list.html

If you follow the Fujitsu link in the very helpful @brookter post (above) you will probably need to click around and specify a ScanSnap model number. My ScanSnap S1500M is listed as “deprecated”, so I simply specified a newer ScanSnap model number (iX1500). I eventually landed at the Ricoh Software Download URL above, from which the ScanSnap Manager V7.2L60 installer file downloaded and installed without problems. The name of the installer file is “MacManagerV72L60WW.dmg”.

Note that this version of ScanSnap Manager differs slightly from older versions of ScanSnap Manager previously used on my scanner. The only difference I observed had to do with a wireless connection that I ignored since my ScanSnap S1500M is USB-connected only. Note that the S1500M scanner needs to be connected (USB) and powered on for the software to run.

Hope this helps!

@Hoppel and @neonate - Does the ScanSnap Home software require “registration” or any connection to Fujitsu/Ricoh servers for installation or operation of the software (other than download of the installer, of course)?

I suffered through Fujitsu’s “Dark Period” a few years ago when ScanSnap Manager was deprecated and the newer ScanSnap Home software required registration and had onerous restrictions such as restriction to one computer only and a license limited to a certain number of installations in your computer. Since then I have avoided ScanSnap Home and used the older ScanSnap Manager instead - no “registration” or other restrictions.

It’s been asking me to register for years - I’ve just ignored it and everything has been working well. (so far). :grinning:

Good news, thank you. Can I assume that your avoidance of registration means that you do not use (and are not required to use) ScanSnap Home’s Cloud service for upload and storage of scanned documents?

I do not use their cloud service - all of my scans are saved to my internal SSD.

Perfect, thanks.

:grinning: 20 characters …

I just opened my ScanSnap Home software to make sure I was not registered and here’s the notification that I got:

I continue to ignore this. I still get updates. It automatically checks for updates daily.

Thank you, good information. I assume that ignoring the registration request does not result in a delay or in other adverse consequences, is that correct?

Please pardon my brief rant … :grimacing:

Admittedly Ricoh’s registration is not mandatory and may be innocent and without malicious intent, but as a security measure I try to avoid software that gratuitously connects, or tries to connect to third-party servers. This is one reason for my continued use of the older ScanSnap Manager software, without the automatic updater check software installed.

I have no idea whether Ricoh’s update-checking activity results in data collection (“data scraping”) for sale to data brokers or other nefarious use. Or whether users’ data is simply sitting in Ricoh’s servers, waiting to be hacked into. As it probably will be, eventually.

This is not over-reacting, in my view. It is now widespread practice for companies to collect user data for sale or other commercial use. Companies that collect data (even for legitimate use) find it hard to resist sale of that data to data brokers or advertisers. Example - with only a few exceptions, television manufacturers no longer make substantial profits from manufacture and sale of the hardware. Instead, profits largely come from sale of TV viewers’ data (from internet-connected “Smart TVs”), as described in a recent episode of Accidental Tech (https://atp.fm) podcast. Another example - 23andMe admitted that private user data is up for sale after being scraped (link: 23andMe data for sale). There are myriads of other examples.

For as long as possible I plan to stay with the older non-internet-connected ScanSnap Manager software. It is still possible to install only the SS Manager without the software update checker.

… End of rant :grinning:

None that I have noticed.

As far as software updates, you can check automatically or manually.

I have an iX500. Wireless scanning stopped with the Sonoma upgrade. Wired - through my OWC Thunderbolt dock - works. ScanSnap Home 2.10.0 (6) works fine.

I was hoping with Sonoma they would release a native app. Not looking like it will make it to the masses. I love my ix1600 but … once I install Rosetta my computer feels slower.
