Storing reference photos with GPS data outside Photos library

One of my hobbies is photography, and I mostly take photos out in nature or in a city. Much of my time is spent moving around taking snapshots of potentially interesting things, things I would like to revisit later when the conditions are right (weeks, months, years later).

I would like to store these snapshots in “ideas photo library” which I could browse to find something that I would like to take a photo of today. I would then like to be able to use the GPS data embedded in the photo to navigate to the correct place (this could for example be far out in a forest).

But I don’t want to clutter up my regular photo library with these photos. And since I don’t always have an internet connection I can’t rely on something that is online only.

Does anyone know of some tool that would be able to do this? The only app I’ve found that kind of could do this is Day One but I’m sure there is some app I haven’t thought of.

You could create a second photo library Create additional photo libraries in Photos on Mac - Apple Support otherwise there’s some open source tools like https://immich.app/ if you still want cross platform access

To follow on from @dustinknopoff good thoughts, here a a couple more.

You could look at PowerPhotos, which will allow you to maintain several Photos libraries easily.

Apsp such as Nitro and Raw Power will show the location maps from photos stored in files (other photo editors will also show that data)

If I’ve understood things correctly only one photo library can be synced to my iPhone? This would mean I would need to change sync library each time I want to go out and find a place that I’ve previously marked as “interesting”.

I’ve already got Nitro, so I could store photos on iCloud and use Nitro to browse them (I think, I haven’t tried yet). I’m also trying an online solution that I think caches photos (at least thumbnails) but I don’t know yet if it caches the metadata. Thanks for the replies.
