Stream deck - can it be powered by USB extension from Mac?

I’m considering purchasing a stream deck and would just like to see if anyone could advise on this query?

I understand that the stream decks don’t have a power switch on them. Further, if my Mac goes to sleep it doesn’t necessarily follow that the stream deck will turn off, too?

As my Mac is under a desk, I was thinking of plugging the stream deck into a USB extension cable plugged into a port on my Mini. That way I could secure the female port of the USB extension to the side of my desk and then plug in/unplug the stream deck from the extension cable, as and when required. I’m just unsure as to whether it would get sufficient power across the extension.

Appreciate it may sound like a daft question, but from experience, if anyone could advise on whether this set up sounds achievable, I’d be grateful for any feedback. I’d likely not bother with one unless I could operate in this manner.

Cheers.

You can set a stream deck to turn off the buttons after 15 minutes of inactivity so it’s dark. You can also set it to show a different wallpaper when your computer is locked, so pick your favourite dark image .

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. But, is it still drawing power while in that state?

When the mac mini sleeps, the streamdeck sleeps with it. I have mine connected to my USB hub connected to my mini and that’s what it does.

I’ve been enjoying using an iPad 7th gen as a streamdeck (with their first party mobile app)

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.
