With all the launcher talk recently on the podcast I had been trying Raycast out. But once again failing to get the hang of it, just too many decades of muscle memory to break.
Now there seems to be a new-ish launcher in the scene, SuperCMD. I was surprised the search brought up zero mentions of it on these forums. Seems to combine Raycast extensions, Wisprflow, AI chat, agents, Cleanshot Pro, Moom, and Maccy all into one launcher and at a one-off price.
Usually these clones donāt solve the hard problems finding files, (for one),and donāt understand why anyone would care when you bring it up.
I realize this sounds a bit uncharitable, but thereās real work that needs to go into the foundations of these things, even with code generation and a target project to copy/steal to help. The UI on top (for the basic launcher results, anyway) is relatively easy.
If thatās true then itās by far the most impressive piece of AI created software Iāve come across. Itās quicker, lighter, and more functional than Raycast.
Thereās a developer that I follow on social media, just a statement of fact, thereās nothing more to it. I follow hundreds of developers on social media, rss, newsletter, etc. But I donāt use all of their software.
This sort of thing actually gives me some significant pause about even trying an app. Just scrolling back a page or two on Twitter, it seems like the sort of attitude that I donāt want the developer of something deeply integrated with my Mac to have. Just feels entirely too cavalier with things.
I realize thatās just my impression, and others may differ. But in the current security climate, the attitude + the bragging about token spend combine to be a rather large red flag to me.
Iāve just looked at SuperCMD and Iām baffled that a developer could rip off Raycast so blatantly and not be embarrassed. Theyāre essentially identical in these screenshots. If this isnāt a vibe-coded ācreate an exact clone of Raycastā project, Iād be amazed.
This is my second post in which I sound like Iām cheerleading for Raycast, but Iād honestly much rather give my money to a team who seem genuinely interested in making a good product than a developer whoās just ripping off other peopleās work.
I totally agree, @snptrs. I am a Raycast fan but Iām not at all interested in their push into increasing AI in Raycast.
Iām hoping they will find a way to make useful for users who want it and want to pay for it ā and hopefully make it unobtrusive to users like me who donāt care.
AFAIK SuperCMD was a reaction to Raycast going non-native to show that it could be done better, faster, smaller, lighter using SwiftUI and native macOS technologies. So I guess it proved the point.
It also shows that one person snd an agent can achieve the same as a team of people.
I do feel uncomfortable that it went from proving a point to a product that is being sold. For me that crosses the line.
