Switched apps? From what to what?

Please share why? thank you

Devonthink + Obsidian → Emacs (mostly org mode)

Continuiing my ongoing move of most things to Emacs which has been around for a long time, is infinitely customizable, and can do any task I need to throw at it. It gives me a common interface for everything and has a really nice editor as well.

I’ve switched from Bear and Agenda to NotePlan. I hadn’t switched because I didn’t have the time to edit all of my daily notes to remove the first line. Well, I found the time. I removed all the Bear tags too.
Once I was able to successfully import everything, and this was the third try to use NotePlan, everything clicked for some reason. Then I realized the price, which is high, was worth it.
I think the best thing I like about NotePlan is the ability to take a task and then schedule it to a later date, with forward and back links so I know how long the task has aged. I also was able to use the search to find and repair all of my back links created with other programs.
Mail/MailMate to MailMaven → the beta is coming along nicely, it looks like they’re fixing a lot of background bugs right now. The next thing I hope they fix is the email editor. It usually likes to expand the first formatting from the original paste to the whole paste and it makes it difficult to get rid of it. One thing it does have is more font size choices than Mail does (14 pt is too small and 18 pt is too large; 16 pt is just right)
The other thing that MailMaven has is the ability to set a review date for an email so that you don’t lose it. It also has very robust rules. Normally, I like to use server side rules, but MailMaven has outgoing rules. I haven’t seen very many email clients that have that. This is very helpful if you’re in a long discussion with somebody - all of your sent email goes into the proper folder and can also have a project assigned to it.
EDIT 10-15: MailMaven lost a sent email the other day. It couldn’t save it to the Fastmail Sent folder.

Used both, OmniOutliner and Logseq, both work fine, they do its job.
To me, stopped using them because it was one additional place to remember if I had stuff in there, so the overhead was not worth it

Been using the native Passwords for years without issues. What did you experience?

Nothing major, just that the passwords (or probably I) got confused with whether a password was saved correctly for a website and I ended up locking myself out of the account and had to run through the whole password reset process …
In 1Password I was always able to verify a password through my password history but that feature has only been added to the native passwords app with OS26 - hence the retry .

Besides that no real issues with passwords themselves - still need to figure out how to handle all the other stored information in 1Password while sharing with family; unfortunately I seem to have a roadblock with the notes app at the moment :man_shrugging:

I agree with this sentiment. For a while I was keeping daily work notes in an outliner, but as @Kraftwerk said, it becomes one more place to check for something I wrote or saved. I do still like to use an outliner at the start of a project to organize and collect my thoughts, but then I usually reach a point where I either export the outline if it’s a writing project or create separate tasks in a task manager.

In addition to OmniOutliner and Logseq, I’ve also enjoyed writing outlines in Bike Outliner, by Hog Bay Software. It’s not quite as visually rigid by default as OmniOutliner, which makes it easier to get started with writing and brainstorming somehow.

If they retire Outlook Classic on windows (currently delayed until 2029), all hell will break loose.

If you’re using M365 it’s a far better experience than a Mac.

I have a 16" MacBook Pro sat in a drawer because it was a worse M365 experience than the Dell laptop I’m currently using.

Sadly, I use M365 too, and yes, it’s quite well integrated into the Microsoft ecosystem

Apple Music (iOS) → Doppler (iOS)

My streaming service, Qobuz, has both macOS and iOS apps.
I use Roon to play the music I own on my local network via my Mac and my iPad.

Between Roon and Qobuz, I’ve got about 90% of my home and mobile listening covered. The only thing I need is an app that will play the handful of MP3 or FLAC files that I want or need to load on to my phone to listen to. Doppler is fits the bill.

Logseq is good. But the last time I tried (about 6 months ago) the paid mobile sync was buggy. I got a feeling it’s a hobby/community-run project w/o a proper business/company behind it. Things may have changed now.

Setapp for 1 device costs about $108 (I think this is USD) a year and includes NotePlan besides many other useful utilities.

I understand that Setapp does not make sense to everyone and really depends on what apps in it you use vs paying for the apps outright (if they have 1-time payment options) directly from their developers.

I just did:

OTP Auth —> Apple Passwords

The reduction in friction is a huge productivity gain. I only just upgraded to iOS 18 and macOS 15 but would have done it earlier if somebody had told me how much of a boost this was.

Of course, with 2FA you can have your codes in as many apps as you like so I still keep OTP Auth, Authy, Microsoft Authenticator around for specific infrequent use cases.

I prefer buying.
Popclip is about $15, Keyboard Maestro is I think $34, and I get to keep them

I’m very interested in this move (though maybe it would be hijacking this thread?).

You replaced software with hardware. Software (in my case, Notion) for which I have little love, with hardware I’ve been trying very hard to justify.

Have you posted elsewhere (or will you) about your use? I’m especially interested in where you store, organize, find/search, and share the notes you’re taking. And, can that “place” handle notes & content others want to send you?

With this move, how hard was it to set up? I have ~20 codes in Authy and would like to move them but it looks like I would have to go to every site and set up from scratch?

Would you mind elaborating on this? Why did you make the switch and what benefits have you experienced? Thanks.

Thank you for noting this Tom! I didn’t realize Bartender is no longer needed until reading your post and am happy to remove it.
