TB2 / USB to a TB4 approved TS4?

Is it possible to connect an older MacBook with TB2 ports to a Caldigit TS4 via a aTB2/TB3 adapter?

(Yes, yes, I’m aware I need to upgrade (or at least replace) my MacBook)

Yes, you can… I’m sure you are aware that data speed will be at TB2 levels.

The answer is No

With a TBT2 cable between the MacBook and the Apple adapter, and the adapter in the TBT4 port on the TS5.

My guess is that the TS5 is expecting a TBT4 connection and not TBT2 converted the TBT3

I am surprised by this. The TS3 will work with TB2 just fine.

I went to the CalDigit site to see if I could find a solution. Apparently the TS4 doesn’t work with Intel Macs. Please see the following…

UNIVERSALLY COMPATIBLE

Having the ability to use the TS4 on any Type-C computer or tablet is incredibly convenient.

Compatible with Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, USB4, and USB-C computers, the TS4 adapts to the host computer it connects to, providing the features available to your computer or tablet.

  • Thunderbolt 4 PC
  • Intel Thunderbolt 3 Mac¹
  • M1/M2/M3 Pro, M1/M2/M3 Max & M1/M2 Ultra Mac¹
  • M1/M2/M3 Mac¹
  • Thunderbolt 3 PC
  • USB4 PC
  • USB-C PC
  • USB-C Windows Tablet
  • Thunderbolt or USB-C iPad²
  • Thunderbolt or USB-C Chromebook

¹ Requires macOS 11.4 (Big Sur) or above
² Functionality is dependent on host computer or tablet’s capabilities.

So it appears it is not the cables you used but perhaps the computer???

This is what I’ve uncovered. However my plan was to purchase a TS4 anyway and just chose to get one on sale.

Definitely not

No. TS4 does not work with the legacy Thunderbolt 1 or Thunderbolt 2 Mac. Apple’s Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter (MMEL2AM) does not support Thunderbolt 4 devices such as CalDigit TS4 and Element Hub.
