TextExpander just expired their iOS Keyboard with no updates in Testflight

The latest version was crashing really badly and their link to get into the beta is giving the old “Not accepting new testers” message… Is this the end my friend?

“This is the end, beautiful friend the end …”

I cancelled my TextExpander subscription a few months ago because I need expansion on mobile, and the app was so bad it made using iPads and phones a misery for me.

This was when they had the keyboard but it was always crashing and buggy. On mobile, it never expanded the snippets unless I typed them, deleted them and typed them again, which was an awful workflow which you include clunky switching keyboards. The TE keyboard was super unstable for me and a pain to use. If that was the best they could achieve, maybe it was a losing battle trying to make it work more reliably, or more likely they were using a bunch of hacks and it wasn’t possible to achieve what they wanted with the current technologies. This wasn’t my only reason to cancel, I also find the Mac interface horrible to use. It feels like a cheaply made web interface, not a desktop app.

I’ve gone to the Apple built in text replacements and they work well in all my apps on mobile and iPad, although the interface for managing snippets is dire. Any complex TE snippets on Mac have been moved to Keyboard Maestro, and I’ve frankly not missed it in the slightest.

Is this a situtation where an older version works better?

I have TextExpander 4.6.5 in my iPhone - it works fine and has worked for quite some time. Oddly it says Copyright 2017. And I do not see TextExpander in the iOS app store any more. The developer’s website says they are “building” a mobile app.

Did they cancel the prior version for some reason and the new/beta one doesn’t work? Why don’t they put the old working version back in the app store for now?

I cancelled a while ago as it was simply affecting my productivity. I was spending ages tinkering and trying to get the keyboard to work so I completely cancelled my account. Therefore, I cannot test an older version anymore.

TBH, it was a good thing for me. Apple replacements work quicker without having to switch keyboards. Even if there was a working version, I prefer this workflow as I use a lot of snippets in iOS apps, more so now than before. The only thing I miss is automatically typing dates, for which I’ve no solution on iOS (KM on MacOS works fine for that).

I only pay $21/year with my 50% lifetime discount so I can be patient while they work on the mobile. It’s not their fault that iOS is a crippled operating sytem used by apple to staple training wheels on users.

anyway… it is one of my “never will cancel” subscriptions. I love it.

the keyboard on that one no longer works. only the new beta had a functional keyboard so you had TE in every app.

I’m very happy with Espanso on my Mac, and on iOS find the default text expansion not great but mostly good enough
