The Prince that was Promised. (Macbook Pro with 5G)

Macworld saying that code reveals 5G Macbook Pro being tested. This would be an instant upgrade for me even I had bought and setup a new macbook pro the day before it releases. So maybe 2026 will be the year.

It looks like Apple was waiting until they could use their own modem chips. I guess they really didn’t want to give Qualcomm any additional business. :grinning:

I’m ready for this if the additional cost of the cell laptop isn’t too high. It’d be nice to have cell Mac, iPad and Watch, and one peripheral cell plan, and juggle it between the devices depending on what the day/week/month calls for.

Apple currently charges about $150 for cellular on the iPad Air and, for some reason, $200 on the iPad Pro. I don’t see how they could justify charging more on a MacBook.

I’d rather have a plan that supports all those devices at the same time…

Unfortunately, neither your nor my wish is available over here.

My plan only supports iPhone and Apple Watch (which I have to pay extra for) with same phone number / data limit (currently “unlimited”), at the same time.

Oh, yes, me too! I’m so inured to telecoms being inconvenient that I didn’t even think to wish for it.

A Cellular MacBook with a macOS watch app tethered to a Cellular Apple Watch would be my dream set up.

Maybe a stupid question, but why would one need a cellular MacBook? On locations where we don’t have wifi, you can always use your phone as hotspot.

That’s indeed what I currently do, but it drains the battery of my iPhone (more than regular phone usage).

as was pointed out, burning two batteries at the same time (iPhone hotspot) is not efficient. but addressing the “need” question, none of us “need” iPhones + iPads + macbook pros in the same bag… we could all “get by” with lesser hardware. most of us will want to use a cellular macbook pro because we can… “where we’re going, we don’t need roads”…

If Macs get cellular, it would be implied (to me) that they are also programmed to more efficiently make use of cellular data. An iPhone sips data compared to a Mac. Every time I tether to my phone at a cafe or hotel, I think “There goes 5gb of data.” That data would go a lot further if macOS were aware it were on a cellular connection did less background stuff while on cellular (which is how iOS behaves).

Connect the iPhone with a cable to the MacBook, so the phone battery isn’t drained?

Wouldn’t the Macbook pro battery drain faster to continously charge the iPhone? Ive been tethering for 20+ years, so no argument is going to convince me. I want my Macbook Pro Cellular and I will pay extra for it.
