ALMOST final update:
Took my old mini-PC (Minix), saved off the Windows license key, reformatted to Ubuntu. Used CUPS to find/install the printer. For the first time in this entire charade the actual drivers for this specific printer were there. Everything after that was piece of cake. Can see the printer from Mac and iOS over network. Prints in color. Will attempt to set up scanning later.
