Well, now that I have everything in place and functioning after my nuke and pave and moving everything from Devonthink to Finder, I’m doing a massive backup. This may take a while even on the work network.

You have my deepest sympathy. That kind of thing is no fun at all.
Get a usb drive. In my experience it not only takes a long time but often fails.

My initial back up is usually around 200GB, to the NAS it usually completes within an evening if I recall correctly, it’s been a while since I had to do it. (crosses fingers / looks for something wooden to touch).
If I’m not actively using the Mac while the backup is running then I open a terminal window & run “caffeinate” to keep it awake, that usually completes through no problem then.

Everything backed up without a problem and everything is now synced in iCloud. I will say, and I don’t believe this is my imagination, after all of this, iCloud is syncing nearly instantaneously across my devices.
