Hi everyone
I updated to MacOS 15.6 this morning and after the install I got a warning as time machine kicked in to do its hourly backup. It warned my that my Apple Time Capsule Disk is not recommended for back ups. Then a big LEARN MORE button. Clicking on the button takes me to Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support where the tech support states that NAS uses AFP and wont be supported in future OS versions. In fact the only time machine method on this page that escapes having this warning is a wired attached hard drive.
Anyone else encountering this? And… NAS has served me well. How can I use Time Machine without having to plug in an external hard drive? (in the future)
Cheers
Russell.
I think it comes down to getting rid of AFP in the OS to be released in 2026 (after Tahoe).
In case of Time Machine Backups to a NAS Apple is stating:
Time Machine backup to NAS devices over Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) is not recommended and won’t be supported in a future version of macOS.
The solution probably will be to use SMB for Time Machine Backups to a NAS as, for instance, Synology is recommending anyway at least for their recent DSM, if you are intending to continue using wireless Time Machine Backups.
I am not 100% sure though.
I have a Synology as well. My older macbook backs up to that leaving the Apple time capsule free as the back up for my M4 Mac Air. I’ll have to check if it uses SMB?
Thanks for the tip @Christian

Apple Time Capsule Disk
Time Capsule will not work without AFP, so when AFP is finally removed you’ll have to find another backup solution.
Of note, this solution, which I posted two years ago, will also not work without AFP, but it might be possible to use samba instead of netatalk.
