Time Machine - What Do I do with Massive Data File On My Synology

I use my Synology NAS to back up my Mac via TimeMachine.

This file is apparently taking up 2.9GB of storage on my 7.5GB external Synology NAS.

My Mac Mini has 1.1TB of data and files on it.

How does the back up get this huge where it is almost 3TB?
Is it ok to delete this file and start over again with TimeMachine?
Is there any way to adjust how TimeMachine backs things up so it takes up a smaller footprint on my NAS?

You can set a quota in order to limit the space being used by Time Machine.

If no quota is being set, Time Machine will always use as much storage as it can before starting to delete old backups.

Quota limit is important. However how much do you want to save? How big is your Mac mini? I would set the quota around 2x to 2.5x of the mini space.
