I’ve been using the Readwise highlight service for a few years. I do almost all of my reading electronically on my iPad, and find the service valuable.
I use Readwise to sync and store all of my highlights from books, blogs, and newsletters. Every morning I read 15 random highlights. These prompt further thinking, and are often the spark for a new blog post idea. I index all of my highlights in DEVONThink, and search them as a part of researching a topic.
Recently I learned about a feature of Readwise that I didn’t know existed–the ability to combine multiple highlights into one highlight. When an author’s points are separated by text, I’ve made individual highlights to avoid a much too large single highlight. But when I encounter these highlights later, they are cut off from their context and meaning. Sometimes I’ve deleted a highlight because it doesn’t make any sense on it’s own (but it did in context).
I wrote about how to combine highlights in Readwise in a blog post, Master Your Highlights: A Simple Trick to Combine Quotes in Readwise.
This discovery has me wondering what else I don’t know about using Readwise. Do any of you know of other tips and tricks I’m not aware of?
