I’ve used todoist for many years, but recently cancelled my subscription. Just had an email that it’s going up by 25% from $48 to $60 per year. Probably still good value if it’s a daily driver.
I was evaluating Todoist as a replacement for Remember The Milk.
Todoist was already a bit more expensive, but now even more…
Todoist has several features that RTM is lacking, but since it does not support start dates I might not be able to switch anyway…
Here are the details about the new pricing:
My move away was simply the difficulty in OS integration. Linking to emails and files etc. Apart from that it is a great cross platform app. Not sure I’d pay $60 a year though.
While not a labeled “Start Date”, Todoist added a Deadline date field, so you can separate when something is due vs when you’re going to work on it.
I already tried using the regular date as start date and the deadline as end date, but that does not work for me: Todoist then still lists all tasks with a date in the past as overdue, even if the deadline is in the future…
Yea, this is one of the reasons I still use Things 3. Just setting a Start Date and having tasks automatically move forward keeps me sane some days. ![]()
I use Omnifocus 4 for over a decade and satisfied.
I always used simple to do lists, or apps, and a calendar. Because any plans I may have made for a particular day frequently changed after first contact with senior management.
I had no reason to change after I retired. ![]()
OmniFocus is awesome. Your time travel abilities are impressive. Using OmniFocus 4, before SwiftUI was even announced. I’m in awe.
I am on the Legacy Pro plan (€32) and don’t need the new features (especially not the AI ones) but I have decided to move away from Todoist (and probably move everything into Reminders which is now good enough, but I am exploring TickTick as well).
I’ll be cancelling my subscription after many years as a matter of principle: this is now a perpetual €32 subscription where the product will not get any new features ever, which is a first in the world of subscriptions.
I get that they need to make money, but this is user-hostile. They have delivered none of the features people have asked for in January on reddit, and many bugs remain.
I’m under privacy regulations and IT setups at work. While I was able to use Todoist in the past, that is no longer the case. I’ve had to switch to MS ToDo at work. It’s…fine.
I was hanging on to Todoist for personal tasks like:
- Turn off outside hoses every fall
- Cover A/C unit every fall
- Review subscription A before it comes due in May
- Take my BP pill every morning at 7am
- Pay parking bill every 20th
- Weekly review every Friday
- Replace furnace filter every 40 days
I don’t love Apple Reminders but for my needs it’ll do. I’ve been contemplating cancelling Todoist anyway now that I can’t use it for all my work/personal tasks. The fact it’s now $84 (CAD) up from $60 (CAD) helps make that decision.
The “ramble” feature is amazing and very cool. One I thought I would use often. I even made it a shortcut on my lockscreen but it’s been there three weeks and I’ve not thought of it even once. So – good in theory.
I truly believe there is a very wide gap between all the fancy features we think we “couldn’t live without” and the ones we actually need. The fact I haven’t touched “ramble” at all supports that theory a little at least.
That’s been my stance for a while now, although it took me a while to learn the hard way by tinkering with more complex apps than I actually need. Obsidian, OmniFocus, and Scrivener come to mind. I wouldn’t speak for others, but for me, a part of that is listening to too many tech podcasts and reading too many tech-centric forums. Those podcasts and comments on tech forums can create FOMO, which I’ve largely avoided because I don’t use social media. However, I’ve come to realize that I have my own FOMO when it comes to technology and applications. ![]()
Given this move, I am now experimenting a bit with Reminders to see whether it can meet my needs, and I think it can.
But… why is the Mac app so… ugly, especially in the way it displays the tasks in the right pane? I know this is a matter of personal preference, but there are many inconsistencies between the iOS/iPadOS and Mac versions, with some options missing (large thumbnails for images) and some actually not working (adding images to tasks via the right-click menu does not work at all; only drag and drop works). This is in macOS 15, I haven’t upgraded yet.
The biggest missing feature for me seems to be that Reminders can only have images as attachments. Being able to attach PDFs would be great. Also, the way Reminders marks the priorities is… visually so poor compared to Todoist.
I agree 100%. To the point I’ve stopped listening to a lot of these shows and pundits. It feels good in the moment to switch apps and tinker, but it rarely gives me any legit advantage.
I still catch myself going off on tangents and diving into caves, but it’s slowly getting better.
We are a work in process! ![]()
Now that you have cancelled ToDoist, what do you use to manage tasks?
I switched back to Omnifocus from Reminders earlier this . OF just fits my style better than any other application that I’ve tried. The logic for scheduling recurring tasks really stands out as a feature that makes managing tasks easier for me .
I fluctuate. My problem is that I’m an excessive tinkerer. OF’s many features provide hours of procrastination for me in the form of ‘tweaking the system for better productivity’. Things 3 is far better for me and probably my most used productivity app.
Having said that I do every so often move to a 3x5 analogue card system. I like the tactile, physical nature of cards.
+1
I’ve been using 3x5 cards on and off since 1973. Before that I was still in school and used whatever scrap of paper was available.
$5/month for todo app isn’t ideal. Plus they are still storing my data (and potentially could sell it at some point, who knows). Paying a few bucks for every app every month adds up overtime. It’s less that the cost of coffee…but how many coffees am I having
. I know people get value from it but the different between todoist and reminders isn’t much now. Todoist is definitely a premium product.
I use Things but if they introduce subscription in the new version, I’m moving to reminders, or heck…will just create a todo app myself. Barrier to entry for creating software is super low now with AI if you are already a programmer. All I need it lists/projects and natural language processing. Enough of these subscription costs.
