Trying Cotypist beta

After hearing about it on the recent MPU episode, I am giving Cotypist a try. This is an AI based predictive text tool which makes suggestions as you type. Seems really good so far and way ahead of the built in functions for this type of thing.

The current beta version is free to use at the moment but not sure what pricing may come along when it formally releases.

Is anyone else trying Cotypist?

I’ve never seen the utility in predictive text functionality.

I type 40-50 words a minute, not the fastest but certainly not the slowest either. By the time I’ve looked up to see what is being offered I can just as easily have finished the word and several others.

I can see this being a benefit if you are slow at typing or hunt and peck with 2 fingers.

What am I missing?

I’m also a fast touch typist as well, making predictive text unnecessary. However, I find it helpful if I’m attempting to type on a screen, which I loath. Most of the time, I use dictation whenever I don’t have the keyboard available.

I’ve been using it for about a year now. (I was initially wondering about pricing as well, but given that the current beta is version 0.2, I suspect it will be some time before there is a formal release.) I find this tool very useful—one of my favorite ‘AI utilities’. It somehow keeps a low profile and doesn’t get in the way of what I am typing, and yet it’s there making useful suggestions. I think it’s utility increases over time, as it learns from what you type, so you need to install and it and run it for a bit to get the most out of it.

Same. I love it. It makes me faster and cleverer.

A few weeks ago I was typing something work related and I was strugggling to get the words right. It offered up a suggestion that was from my own intellectual property. TBH I felt a little silly because it was not only the right words, it was my words, and I’d forgotten them.

Very useful.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I am getting on OK with Cotypist but it is early days yet.

I have loaded the better model (Gemma 3 4B) on my Mac Studio and the basic one on my MacBook Air to see if any noticeable difference. Will report back here when I have used it more.

I’ve been using Cotypist since March 2025.

It was useful from the beginning and has become an indispensable addition to my Mac. It learns over time, and all of the AI magic is performed locally, alleviating privacy concerns.

Cotypist is developed by Daniel Gräfe, who’s also the developer of the excellent Timing app, which has been referenced on MPU many times.

Been using Cotypist for over a year. Now it knows my abbreviations, my tone, my product names frequently used people names and on top of it it’s just as if I have dictated it.

Fantastic app. The way it figures out the correct context for its suggestions feels telepathic at times.

I’m a fast typist but I’m going to give this a trial. :crossed_fingers:t2:

I’ve been using it since it first came out, and despite being a fast touch typist I have found it worthwhile.
It’s pretty good in coding completion too.
