Looks like Reeder 5 is now Reeder Classic and this is the new Reeder app. I’ve been a fan of Reeder 5 and Mela so I figure I’ll give this one a try.
I just downloaded it, and it’s funny that the annual subscription is more expensive than the monthly subscription for me.
$10 per year is certainly a reasonable subscription price, but this new version doesn’t fir my use case like Reeder Classic does.
Agreed. I thought it was going to be more.
Trying it too… I don’t know if I’m missing something, but is there a way to mark as read in the Mac app?
Also see:
Oh, I see. There’s no “mark as read”.
Hm, I don’t know if I like the idea to have another timeline… the main reason I use RSS readers is precisely to keep away from doomscrolling.
No. Annual is $10 which is ten months.
For me I advocate this idea because I am not forced to read everything.
I also like to add YouTubes in the app. I don’t like YouTubers having opinions but want to watch some clips or ads like airlines. Watching on YouTube can be distracting due to videos with opinions.
And it’s €10/year or €1/month in the EU.
But I have seen a report in the Tapestry Discord from someone in Europe in a country that’s not using the Euro where the price per year was more than 12 times the price per month…
I’m in the same boat. I like the old versions way of viewing only unread stories and being able to “mark all as read” with one push of a button if none of the headlines interested me.
I’ve already read many divisive opinions on various online threads. My view, as a long time Reeder user, is to give it a try for a few weeks before I render a quick opinion.
It is definitely a paradigm shift.
So far, I am enjoying the flow of a single list of all my info sources (w exception of Threads). It looks like this will certainly simplify the number of apps I need to access to “get caught up”. Opening to last read feels good so far.
I do miss the unread counts and a ‘mark all as read’ function when viewing individual feeds. Folders will be nice addition when they return.
I am huge fan of Silvio’s apps. I’ve purchased every version of Mela and especially Reeder on every platform available. MPU members are aware of how much disdain I have for subscription, but and am absolutely willing to pay $10 a year for classic reeder that is constantly updated.
That said I just do not understand what problem is being solved with this. I can subscribe to YouTube, podcasts through my Reeder classic (though I prefer pocket casts for podcasts in the car).
I know this is just v1.0 but the endless feeds, no unread numbers, folders and many other features. I just do not understand this app at all. I wish he had kept the Reeder classic and added the YouTube, later, bookmarks, video and audio feature while strengthening it with features like Rules and filters.
Can you imagine power features in Reeder classic like rules and filters for a sub of .80 cents a month.
What a wasted opportunity and colossal waste of time that could’ve otherwise been spent improving Reeder 5
Exactly. I wish Silvio had spent more time updating Reeder 5 with power features.
I am not in Project Tapestry beta. Is Reeder. what Tapestry try to achieve? I am in Tapestry Kickstarter and it was a one-time purchase. I wonder how that will affect Reeder.
It will be interesting to see how his new concept for the “new” Reeder app will pan out in the future. I do get what he is aiming for. He wants an app that is capable to “read” anything (RSS, JSON, YouTube, Fediverse data) and to sync reliably between devices without the need to rely on external services doing so. And it even can be a platform to create a feed based on your Reeder contents that can be read by other services or readers (you could basically create your “own” feed and share it). There is no unread count. There is a timeline that is being synced and you will be able to resume reading, listening … where you have left the app before. Which is one of the reasons why Reeder has no integration of external RSS services (it needs to create a reliable timeline on its own in order to deliver reliable timeline syncing). A totally different concept and a totally different approach.
RSS is great, but it is struggling. It is a format for the geeks out there that consume content provided by geeks and bloggers. Mainstream RSS feeds fade away or are crippled to just URLs and headlines. RSS may not go anywhere or it will. Who knows?
The new app has the potential to be more than “just” a nice looking (yeah, I do care, judge me if you want!) pure RSS reader app with a technical basis that is ready for future content. What is interesting is that he has launched the app as is with the announcement to add stuff like folders later (which are important for some) and a lot of swipe gestures that always had been the strength of Reeder Classic. I wonder if it would have been wiser to add those features before releasing this fundamental new approach to his audience, especially those who treasure his app for 15 years now.
But…
I just want a RSS reader. That works. With my FreshRSS instance. And yes, RSS to me means that there is unread content and read content which I want to have separated. And yes, I also want to be able to marke huge chunks of content as read because sometimes… We all know how RSS feeds can look like at times. I do not want to have everything in one app. YouTube is YouTube. Mastodon is Mastodon. RSS feeds are RSS feeds. I am the old-fashioned guy. So the new Reeder app is not for me. It will be interesting to see, if Reeder Classic really will stay with us and if it really will receive the necessary updates in the future.
That is fine with me: Reeder Classic it is - or I may move over to NetNewsWire. And who knows? If the new Reeder will be successful and nice and what not, I may change my view. Right now with the current state of the new app and of myself? No.
I still think that Silvio Rizzi has done a good job rethinking his Reeder app. He has a vision for a broader audience. If this will work out, it is a solid base for growth and sustainability. And he has Reeder Classic if it will not work out. For the time being, his customers get to choose.
I like the idea behind the new Reeder, having most of my ‘to be read’ content in one place is what I’ve been looking for. Not having read/unread markers is proving to be tricky already though. For example, if I go directly to one of my feeds in the sidebar and read the latest articles and then flip to the ‘Home’ filter I will see the same articles again in the feed with no ‘read’ state. I’m going to give it a try but it feels like Silvio might need to course correct on this decision over time.
One interesting benefit of the public feed feature is that I can create a feed from the ‘Links’ filter in new Reeder. I can then use the share sheet in safari to add read it later articles to new Reeder’s Links filter and then share the public feed of that to Reeder Classic. This gives me a read it later filter in Reeder classic with read/unread counts.
I’m struggling with Read Later, Bookmark and Favourites. They all serve the same purpose for me
Yes, the goals are similar with Tapestry.
A big advantage of Tapestry is that you can create your own sources by writing “Connectors” (in JavaScript) that generate data.
I am in the beta and created two connectors so far: one that shows me entries from my Trakt calendar (episodes from TV shows or movies that are released today) and one that shows me a graph of yesterday’s production data of my solar panels. I have a few other ideas, but currently no time to work on those.
Tapestry is (probably) only a one-time purchase for backers of the Wool tier and above and might use subscriptions for new users (non-backers).
