Turn off optimize Mac storage does not work

Storage optimization was enabled on my iMac. Since macOS Catalina, all files are deleted locally almost immediately and only stored in the cloud: You can recognize it by the small cloud next to the file name.

I deactivated memory optimization the usual way:

  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your Mac’s screen.
  2. Select System Preferences from the drop down menu.
  3. Click on iCloud.
  4. Click on Options next to iCloud Drive.
  5. Click to uncheck the checkbox at the bottom of the window for Optimize Mac Storage .

But it still deletes my local copies. How do I deactivate it?! Any Idea?

The usual (but inelegant) approach to this kind of issue is to sign out of iCloud in System Preferences and the sign back in.

I don’t know whether it will work properly (iCloud has developed a mind of its own), but if you can tolerate the pain, it’s worth a try
