Two-finger Double tap on Magic Mouse does not work …

I cannot reliably get a two-fingered double tap on my Magic Mouse to open Mission Control. Occasionally (usually when I do NOT want it) Mission Control will display but this is a rare occurence and exactly why it happens I cannot determine! Most of the time the result of two-fingered double tap selects some arbitrary piece of text in the with focus window of the current program, which is typically Firefox but not always.

Switching to my Apple Wireless Trackpad a multi-finger swipe does open Mission Control.

I have had to resort to using F3 on my Magic Keyboard.

Anyone experienced this problem? (There are no posts here about it; I searched for them.)

Basic Troubleshooting Information
:green_apple: > System Settings … > Mouse > More Gestures > Mission Control is on
macOS Sonoma 14.5
Magic Mouse
There are no third party extensions running my Mac Mini M1.

My apology if you have already tried these elementary steps. These have helped me with bluetooth issues in the past:
Turn off, then turn on mouse and allow it to re-connect.
Turn off, then turn on bluetooth in System Settings.
In System settings > Bluetooth > Forget this device, then re-pair the mouse.

If those don’t work, then look for a source of interference. Sometimes just connecting too many bluetooth devices will do it - for example, keyboard, mouse and external trackpad.
Another possible source of interference would be a USB 3.0 device such as a portable disk drive. Try disconnecting any USB 3.0 devices temporarily and re-test the mouse.

Good luck!

Actually I hadn’t done those things but when I try turning off bluetooth macOS won’t let me! Pops up a modal dialogue telling me if I were to do that then I could not control the Mac.

It might be that I have too many devices connected. Although the Magic keyboard is wired in at the moment. And yes there are USB drives attached.

It seems weird that only one feature of the Magic Mouse would be compromised by such interference.

Yes, weird. But I have seen this behavior also; it resolved after turning off mouse (slider switch under the mouse), then back on again. Mouse behavior becomes normal again, at least for a few days.

After I unpaired the mouse (“forget this device”), then re-paired, the mouse behavior has been normal since then.

Years ago I experienced bluetooth issues like this on an older Intel iMac. After speaking with a senior-level Mac advisor, we concluded that a bluetooth interference issue was the cause. I discontinued use of my 3rd bluetooth device (separate trackpad) and the problem resolved. Now, years later with a newer Mac Studio and new keyboard, mouse and trackpad, there are no more problems. My USB 3-connected disk drives are different (now SSDs with very short USB cables.

RFI (radiofrequency interference) problems are notoriously difficult for ordinary users to identify and resolve. Removing/re-installing RF-connected devices seems to be the only way to troubleshoot. And remember the notorious USB 3.0 RFI issue. Try removing USB 3-connected devices temporarily to see if that helps.

Some USB hubs can be problematic for Bluetooth. Once upon a time, when my 2018 Mac mini was my daily driver, replacing a USB hub fixed my Bluetooth issues. Thus you could try disconnecting devices and hubs to see if it resolves the issue.

However, as you note, the mouse is otherwise working, thus I doubt it is a Bluetooth issue.

And for what it is worth, I just fired up may Magic Mouse, did a two finger double tap, and it worked as expected.

Good luck getting it sorted.

I don’t own one.

After disconnecting/turning off and reversing that the mouse did respond to the two-finger double click but subsequent attempts remain outside of Mission Control.

I think we can then rule out a Bluetooth issue.

Interestingly, I was able to reproduce the issue. But it did not last. If I double clicked with the mouse, and then did a double tap Mission Control was not invoked. If I then scrolled by sliding my finger on top of the mouse, a double tap did invoke Mission Control.

Alas, this was not repeatable.

How old is the mouse? Do other mouse surface gestures work correctly?

It is rather old but I can’t recall exactly when I bought it.

Everything else works including the two-fingered swipe. It is only the two-fingered double tap that does not.
