The power button on the AppleTV made a break for freedom, but I managed to locate it again. I also managed to re-set it in place, but it is not sticking there.
I’d love to fix it, but am out of ideas. Of course, I can buy a new one, but it works perfectly otherwise.
I suspect that there should be some retaining tabs on the back of the button to hold it in place but they must have broken. If it’s not obviously been dropped I’d be tempted (if it’s local) to swing by the Apple Store to ask them if it should fail like this, they may just replace it with a new one. If it’s not too far out of your way, it’s worth taking a punt.
As @geoffaire notes, the tabs may have broken off. Or at least enough of them so that it won’t stay connected. You could try gluing it to the top of the switch. A dab of glue in the center of the button to the switch top. But that could be fragile.
And as he suggests, a visit to the Apple Store might be helpful.
And if you just press the exposed switch does it work? I so then use it sans button.
I know it’s not really helpful, but I rarely use the power button. Menu or Back buttons wake up ATV and thus my tv, so I almost always do that, then I like the photos screensaver and have the ATV sleep 30 minutes after it’s not in use (and thus power off the TV). Sometimes I do want to shut the TV off right away to hide distractions from the kids, and in that case you could press and hold the Menu button I think it is, to pull up “control center” and I believe there’s a power off option there.
Cosmetically you could still glue the power button back if it still doesn’t work in place.
I suspect this is the case. I can see two tabs on the back and I think one is missing. This would indicate that the button could only be inserted from below, before the remote is closed up.
I actually have an Apple Store just 20 minutes away, so will swing by and ask them. Thanks!
The mall with my Apple Store is no longer under seige by feral holiday shoppers, so I brought in my remote for them to take a look at. First, we established that it was out of warranty, but the tech then asked if I maybe had a more recent Apple TV in my household. Which I did, and this one was still under warranty.
Five minutes later, I was out of the store with a new Siri remote - this time with a USB-C charging socket to boot. Saved me €80/- too.
Not that I would have bought a new one, because the workarounds mentioned here are quite sufficient, but a good experience none the less.
