Using Screens or another screen sharing solution as a "pseudo target display mode"?

I love my 2020 iMac 4k, and I do not want to dump it. I have moved on to a Macbook Pro Max, and I want to use that as my primary machine. Thoughts on setting it next to the iMac and using Screens to control it on the iMac 5k screen? No gaming, but lots of Xcode. Otherwise, I am going to buy a Dell or Samsung monitor with lots of ports and send the iMac to the retro closet of goodies.

My first thought was to use Luna’s hardware for better performance.

I used to admin Windows servers all the time from an old iMac so it should work. IMO it would definitely be worth trying.

“Once you have your cable, you’ll plug into the back of your iMac and the other end will go into your primary Mac’s USB port.”

Confusing. If I am just cabling two ports, why do I need that dongle?

Edit: YouTubed it. I guess, the dongle is what works the magic and independent of the cable.

Thanks for the idea. I ordered it. I saw where they don’t recommend it for gaming or video editing which the iMac does fine. So not a deal breaker. I hope it works great with Xcode as I will be able to keep my boot camp’d PC gaming machine by not dumping the iMac. While the iMac handles Xcode perfectly for me, it’s not mobile. I can’t always return to my desk to work on things.

I will use a belkin thunderbolt 3 cable from the M3 Max to the iMac and report back on my findings just in case anyone else is thinking of this. Remind me if I forget. :grinning:

Please do! This was always one of the niceities of this forum (back to the Facebook days) folks would let the thread know WHAT HAPPENED. Now, not so much…
