Major failing of Discourse (what is in use here) is that the New and Unread numbers are often wrong. I prefer to use Unseen. Some Discourse sites have that in the menu bar at the top and other add it to the hamburger menu both of which save the user (me in this case) having to amend the URL to include to include unseen as https://talk.macpowerusers.com/unseen
