Vertical line on Studio Display

Hey all,

This morning I noticed a flickering vertical line on my Studio Display and while that’s distracting, I’m mostly freaked out because this thing is expensive. I’ve had it ever since it came out and I never bumped it into anything or dropped it, etc.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Unplugging from the wall
  • Cleaning the built-in thunderbolt cable
  • Restarting my Mac
  • Connecting to another Mac
  • Trying another Thunderbolt 4 cable (I get no image)

Anyone had this issue before?

Whatever you connect to this Studio Display… can you connect to another external display and see if it happens there?

Sounds like you may have a bad LED acting up. Hope you have AppleCare.

Well I’d tried connecting another Mac to that display and the line was still there.

This morning the line was gone but now it’s back… I don’t have Apple Care, no.

Oof… Sorry to hear it is outside of coverage. Did you purchase this at the same time as your Mac? And does that Mac still have AppleCare? I’ll admit that I am reaching really hard for a solution that isn’t costly.

This does sound like an expensive repair since the LCD/LED panel most likely would need to be replaced. You might want to consider a trip to your local Apple Store to see if they might have “Magic Trick” to unstick that LED. Unfortunately you would know what the cost of repair would be.

With two of you having an identical issue as bad as that arising after the warranty is over, I’d think twice about buying one, considering that it costs so much more than most other monitors. I would have expected it to last at least 10 years and through multiple Macs.

No, my Macs don’t have AppleCare anymore. That’s a good lesson for the future… To learn more about this program. (I’m still not sure what it does, I never subscribed since I take good care of my devices.)

I don’t have any Apple Store nearby but there’s an official reseller, I’ll ask there…

Damn, exactly the same issue and timeframe… If it becomes a trend perhaps we’ll receive a refund or something?

Yeah… The Studio Display came out exactly when I was thinking about getting an external display for the first time in my life so I decided to invest but that’s just disappointing.
