Virgin Media UK & Mastodon

Any other Virgin Broadband users having this issue that started for me last week? My feed shows but no media (pictures, links, videos, avatars) do. I’ve tested this on Ivory (Phone & Mac), Ice Cubes and Mastodon app with the same results. If I turn off wifi and use 4G, it works in every case. If I use wifi in another location (not Virgin) it works.

I’ve not been on Virgin for 2 years, but their network management was getting worse and worse, add this to their ceaseless drive to make customer support cheaper (and far less effective) and after being a customer for more than 15 year (during which the speed of my line went from 128 kbps to 120mbps) I finally snapped when I couldn’t even manage a teams call.

I moved to Zen Internet on a line which (by advertised speeds) was half the capacity (Virgin - 120mbps to just over 60mbps) but was significantly faster and amazingly more reliable, plus was £10 a month cheaper.

The best bit of it all is that if I have a problem, I can pick up the phone and someone answers it, they even know what they’re doing.

It doesn’t surprise me that you’re being denied access to content as Virgin doesn’t seem to understand their own network.

Try replacing DNS Servers with some non-Virgin Media DNS Servers. I’m using Google’s and CloudFlare’s on my Macs.

Got home today and it’s all working now. No idea why.

Apple provides the traceroute command which will show you the routers through which your connection goes through between your Mac and the server, e.g. mastadon.social

If you notice it not working in future, it might be interesting to you to run this command and then you can get an idea of where the failure. Probably can’t do anything about it, but would give you a clue.
