Hi MPUers, I’m looking for a good voice to text solution on the macOS similar to the voice input feature on iOS. I know there is the dictation feature, but that doesn’t work well (it stops if you press another key to fix a word unlike the iOS feature). Importantly, I’m hoping this solution does the processing offline and on device (occasional updates can be done manually)
Use case: Sometimes not in the mood to type much; slow typer 50-60; speaking also helps me think better on certain occasions.
The latest version of macOS, running on Apple silicon, lets you dictate, type and mouse simultaneously.
And it is fantastically useful.
For me, a writer who’d lost his writing mojo, it’s gotten me back in my game. It’s so much faster and more accurate than anything I’d tried before.
Unfortunately, unless you’re working on an Apple silicon machine, it will keep working the old way (I think), ao if that’s the case, it would be an expensive solution.
If dictation is really important to you, from a commercial point of view, it’d be worth upgrading.
Many years ago I bought my first Mac just so I could use Scrivener, and that was an excellent investment for me. Now that I’ve gotten used to the new dictation engine and the predictive typing, I would be devastated if I had to go back to a machine that didn’t let me use it. I’ve spent years trying and failing to use dictation well (I hate the company that sold dragon dictate and dragon and dragon naturally speaking, for making their dictation engines so good, but everything else wrapped around the engine so bad) and this is the first time EVER that I’ve been able to make dictation work for me.
Dictation isn’t perfect, of course, but I make far few mistakes when dictating than I do when typing. And it’s 3-5 times faster than my typing.
