VoodooPad app status

There is something about VoodooPad that keeps me coming back to it. Simplicity for one. But the app feels like it has missed a lot of the developments in both the notes app field as well as general updates to app development tools.

But I am not a developer.

And so I am wondering what the state of VoodooPad development is?

Coincidentally, I was looking for info about VoodooPad a while ago.

I don’t think it has been updated for many years - the app store shows 5.4 was the last update, released three years ago . I am not even sure it have been updated for Apple Silicon. The last post on Primate Labs site is from Jan 2022

As far as I can see it is abandonware.

EDIT: Just went back to their site - there was some response to a V6 beta here - but I cant see anything more on it

EDIT 2: Further delving into support posts reveals this link to a version 6.preview I seems to work in the trial mode.

Good find @Nick

VoodooPad stopped running on Tahoe, but the v6 beta you found installed perfectly and accepted my v5 license.

I gave up on VodooPad. The last update in 2022 5.4 was a cosmetic one, to circumvent a warning dialog flag from Apple.

The attitude of the developers does not encourage hope.

I used VoodooPad from the time it was a Beta from Gus Muller of Flying Meat. It’s on its third developer company now.

I’ve moved on.

I’m sorry v6 preview has been on the go for nearly 6 years. I loved Voodoopad, but once sold went downhill quickly and is basically abandonware. Its uniqueness back in the day is now available in nearly every notes app.

It’s an app that was great and could have been awesome were it not for shoddy ownership.

Thanks for all the responses, everyone. I decided to try Bear. It seems to offer the functionality I want.

I wish I’d seen this before upgrading to Tahoe this weekend! But for better or worse, VP5.4.0 is still working for me. Thank goodness, I have 18 years of work notes in this…

There’s something oddly satisfying about apps like this that stick to their core idea instead of chasing every new trend . Sure, it feels outdated in places, but that simplicity is probably why people still come back. Same vibe I get working with Phonexa sometimes, where not overcomplicating things actually ends up being the biggest advantage.

Very interesting - Private but syncable through iCloud or Dropbox, basically Vodoocloud with modern local AI built in, versionable per page, 1 time purchase. That’s a nice set of features that may appeal to a broad group.

Actually, Primate Labs did release VoodooPad 6 in 2021 during a very very brief opening of their cone of silence about the product. I managed to get the app at the time, and it still works. (macOS reports that VP6 is silicon compliant, but we’ll see if that’s true when Rosetta is retired.)

MojoPad looks nice, but $59 is steep for me.

Looks nice… is there a roadmap that includes iOS?

@MojoPad - Perhaps I am missing something. The sidebar appears to be a flat list of pages without recognizing subpage relationships - is that correct?

Hopefully I am a mistaken. For a Wiki if the index cannot be organized to reflect such subpage relationships that is a fatal omission.

Exactly how does an Electron app “run natively on macOS”?

What “infrastructure costs” are there for a personal desktop app?

Your justification for the price is weird. Any app (or business) has costs such as payment systems, development, etc. Not begrudging paying; it just seems weird to cite those as reasons for the price. Just say “I gotta eat, etc.”

@MojoPad

Excellent - the quick response is much appreciated. That works much better in the new version

Two other observations/questions when you can:

(1) I see that I can reference pages as [[This Page ]]. For most Wikis if that page does not exist yet it is automatically created when content with the brackets is added to the page. It would be helpful if yours did that rather than the separate step to create a link

(2) Is there a way to customize the bookmarklet so I can configure a “Clippings” Wikipage or similiar and then all clippings automatically become subpages of that master Clippings page? Perhaps with a standard format so I do not need to select which format each time?
