My comments were directed at Microsoft on macOS. Yes, Office 365 is much better on Windows. But on macOS, many problems…mostly little ones that still manage to take much of my time trying solve them.
Especially since it was delivered in the “I know my way around computers” voice. The urgently needed “original document” was never mentioned again…
Data preparation is vital in data science. Imports into R can also be problematic if you don’t watch out for those.
Oh boy, don’t even begin with Google Sheets…
I tried to hold out. I really did. Now, I too, am waiting for my M1 Mac…
When I looked the checkbox against Desktop & Documents in iCloudDrive settings was unchecked. When I checked it, exited the window and went back in it was unchecked again. Same thing happened in Safe Mode. Looks like a bug to me. I’m planning to shift my Documents folder onto my NAS
I’ve got a 2012 vintage Drobo. There’s no Dashboard app for that that runs on Big Sur! Luckily for me a drive failed earlier this year and I bought a replacement WD NAS. I just haven’t got around to transferring the files…
My important stuff is already on a Synology. I just keep that Drobo around for non-vital usage.
Today is the day!
Biggest thing I’ve learned from waiting on this? UPS’s tracking is terrible.
- The Progress only shows the latest of each “event type” - I’ve got only the latest “In Transit” update, Cleared Customs, Shipped and Label Created.
- “In Transit” statuses can mean a lot of things. Arrival scan? Departure scan? “It’s still here but we don’t know which bin to put it in so it goes into the right truck” scan? Who knows!?
- The timestamps on each event don’t show a timezone so I had multiple updates showing as being in the future, then way in the past as the package transited Taiwan, then Anchorage. But not knowing how far in the future Taiwan is, I couldn’t work out in my head when those scans took place.
- It logs you out pretty quickly, so you have to log back in often. My UPS account is now at the top of my “Favorites” in 1Password without me explicitly putting it there. No, I haven’t been obsessively refreshing the tracking page every 2 hours. Why do you ask?
It is fascinating watching https://www.flightradar24.com/airport/sdf/ from midnight to 1 AM EST. Watching multiple streams of UPS flights from all over the continent converging on one airport is wild.
One of the best things about Deliveries is that it shows the history of the previous events.
Until it’s “Out For Delivery” I wouldn’t expect to get it the same day.
It’s been on the truck all day and roaming all over town with a bizarre route. They stopped at the same location twice!
The truck is in the next neighborhood over so hopefully very soon
So I am worried about my Mac Mini…according to Apple…it was supposed to be Dec 21. according to UPS, it was supposed to be today. But then strange stuff happened.
- Departed Shenzhen, China on December 12
- Arrived at Chek Lap Kok, Hong Kong on December 12
- Got notifications “your package is in transit” until December 15, then it started showing “delivery unknown”
- Departed Hong Kong today and now slated for Dec 22.
The only reason I am a bit unsettled is one of my friends ordered the M1 Macbook Air and it was stolen out of the box during transit He contacted Apple this morning, UPS still delivered the torn empty box and allowed him to take a picture and refuse delivery.
Thanks for the advice. Bought the Applecare. Ended up with the MacbookPro for three reasons:
- It was in stock and available for immediate purchase and pickup at local Apple store. Macbook Air was a wait for several weeks.
- Never had the touch bar and thought I’d give it a try. It’s not bad. Fingerprint ID is definitely a game changer for me. It really saves me time.
- My Apple stock has gone through the roof. Makes me feel good to purchase Apple products.
