I’ve got a nice old door bell push (ceramic button with metal surround) and a 1970s bell unit which I’d like to keep but the wire in between is broken somewhere I can’t access. I’m new to home automation. Does anyone know of way to link the two (always open push button transmitter and I guess a receiver which activates a relay) plus gain benefit of a notification over the network?
Two choices. Get a cheap wireless doorbell from Home Depot
Or
Drill hole into the wall and install ring camera and run the power cable
I do t think there’s any way you’re going to be able to use your existing button with something like a Ring doorbell. The Ring can be configured to work with your existing bell but it requires the wiring to work.
Fixing your existing wiring might be possible but it will require some testing to locate the problem. You will need a multimeter with TDR (time domain reflectometer) capability. A TDR can measure the length of a wire and tell how far away a break in the line is. Any break is most likely near the button or the transformer since those items are often removed when painting. Doorbells usually have solid wire which doesn’t respond well to flexing as it work hardens and becomes brittle.
Thanks I’ll keep looking
Thanks, the TDR multimeter is interesting I hadn’t heard about this for electrical work, I have seen similar with optic fibres which is really cool
