I’m looking to buy a webcam to go on my LG Ultrafine 21" monitor when connected to my MacBook Air. Need reasonable quality mainly for video meetings. Don’t really want to spend more than £/$100.
I’m following to see what people recommend. I use a Logi 720 webcam and it’s ok. But I wouldn’t be averse from getting some better quality.
Compatible recent iPhone in a Belkin holder works really well
I still use a Logitech C920 that I bought years ago.
That or the C925.
It’s a no frills decent 1080p camera. I don’t need (or want) 4K but one requirement for me was the privacy shutter. Absolute MUST HAVE for any camera.
After trying a bunch like Elgato, Logis and Anker C300 I kept the Anker C200 for a couple of reasons:
- Nice small size as I take it with me when I’m at the office
- physical privacy shield-
- detachable USB-C connection … I don’t really like fixed cables-
- 2k resolution instead of 4K … imho 4K isn’t really needed for webcalls as most quality is probably lost during Teams, Zoom, WebEx sessions-
- Decent image quality and colors in my opinion … nothing to rave about but better than 99% of other peoples cams I get to see
- Nice stand to put on a monitor or notebook-
- standard screw at the bottom to go on a tripod just in case
- OK software to set some parameters
- Ability to adjust field of view-
One downside is the auto focus which sometimes looses focus but nothing really bad and could be overcome with a fixed focus in software
Pretty good price for the quality in my opinion - at Prime Day currently available at 45€ in Germany
At Home I enjoy the build in cam of my Studio Display
I have this one and it works very well. As @JensV mentioned, it has a USB-C connector, as opposed to a captive cable.
I use my iPhone with Continuity Camera as well. Much better quality than any webcam I’ve seen and replaced a C920. I 3D printed a drop in mount for my Dell monitor with the right angle preset and that’s inconspicuous when not in use.
I helped someone set one up and they’re very happy with it for the reasons you mention. It’s $48 right now on the US Amazon site.
Too bad the built-in cameras on MacBooks and iPads don’t have them.
After using my iPhone in Community Camera mode I switched to a cheap webcam I bought off of Amazon. Quality is acceptable. I use it two or three times a week for online evening classes, political meetings, and general Zoom.
The quality that is not aceptable is the artifacts that halo around other meeting participants as Zoom/Teams/etc blur our backgrounds. Those artifacts increase my cognitive load; I wish that feature could be permanently removed.
