So I want to upgrade from my LG UltraFine 5K display since I started appearing on a weekly podcast.
Streaming & Webcams go beyond any of my current knowledge of technology. Just wanted to see what webcam I should be looking at right now I am between but am open to other suggestions as long as its a nice improvement from the build in LG camera.
Elgato Facecam MK2
or
Logitech MX Brio
I don’t love the current logitech G Hub software but it seems to have gotten better in the past few months as far as memory leaks.
The only concert I have with a monitor-mounted webcam is I currently have a BenQ Light Bar mounted on top of the LG 5K so it would take some rigging which is why I’ve stuck with the built-in webcam this long.
I’ve also tried the Logitech Litra Glow key lights but it don’t see a ton of difference in the video so I also might pull the trigger on an Elgato Key Light Air (I need the desk stand i can’t clamp behind my display) But part of me wants to spend that $ on the Elgato Green Screen XL.
I believe that there is a webcam mount for the BenQ light bar, as I was looking for a light bar (ended up with the Xiaomi version instead) but I don’t have to many issue balancing my webcam on the light bar. Looks like a similar mounting system as the MX Brio.
I can’t comment on the webcam’s to much however - I did upgrade mine from an old Logitech C270, but only to a Brio 100 for 1080p but then I only need mine for WFH and then only internal calls really, so don’t need top quality .
I use my iPhone with Camo. I used to have it on a Belkin mount above my monitor. Now I have 32" Display it felt too far away and so I put it on a selfie stick.
Interesting. I’ve been using a Logitech C920? for something like10 years. I purchased an iPhone 16 Pro last week and wonder if my old iPhone 11 would make a good webcam?
I have this exact monitor and have had both the MX Brio and the Facecam (not the MK2 variant). I had both plugged into the back of the UltraFine 5K. I had multiple issues with the Elgato. I had to unplug and plug the Facecam back in at least a couple times a week to get it to come back to being an option on the Mac for a camera. It seemed to also interfere with my Logitech receiver plugged into the back of the monitor as well. I originally thought it was maybe the cable that came with the Facecam, tried an Anker cable and had similar results. I eventually replaced it and went with the MX Brio and it’s been really solid with none of the issues I mentioned with the Facecam.
It depends on how good the main camera on the iPhone 11 was. I assume the answer is pretty good. It’s almost certainly better than most webcam’s camera.
I tried a bunch of Webcams last year, including the Brio 4K and other and also the Elgato (not MK2) but couldn’t get any to look good despite me trying all the settings, YouTube tutorials and what not …
In the end I’m sticking with the internal webcam of my Studio Display when working from home and while on the go I’m pretty happy with the Anker PowerConf C200 for a couple of reasons:
detachable USB-C cable
mountable onto a tripod-
small and compact for transport-
privacy lid-
2k resolution (for video talks 4K doesn’t make sense in my opinion)
this is purely guess but I feel the sensor might be bigger compared to smaller webcams and 4K webcams, hence it captures more light?-
Nice field of view-
easy but capable software
not sure if seetungs are even stored on camera?
Good value for the money
Only downside is the autofocus which can be wobbly, but since I keep a relatively fixed distance I keep it deactivated most of the times. Don’t know if the c310 version improved on that?
I think I later read somewhere that Elgato does not want the camera plugged into a hub whatsoever and does not support that, which might explain all my experiences.
I’ve been using my old iPhone 11 as my webcam for a couple of years. The camera is excellent. The only problem is that occasionally Continuity Camera fails but then it will start working again. Sometimes needs a reboot of either phone or Mac.
If you don’t have an iPhone you want to use with either the (now) built-in camera sharing, or a utility like Camo Studio, the best recent recommendation I’ve gotten was for the Insta360 Link 2. It’s $200, but in addition to 4K it has “AI”-based features like face tracking (physical gimbal), gesture recognition, and so on. There’s also a fixed (no gimbal) version that’s cheaper.
I haven’t used it, so take with a grain of salt. But it’s the top camera in my Wishlist. You can find plenty of reviews on YouTube; I’ve seen it in several of the various “best of 2024” roundups…
