Not trying to be lazy, but last week I noticed that I have over 300 apps on my MBP (I am highly suggestible, and tend to d/l a few after each episode of MPU). Even worse is the fact that I cannot readily identify what these apps do based upon their names.
Wondering whether there is an app that will quickly look at my app folder and produce a list of app names and describe what they do. I don’t look forward to entering the names 1 at a time in my browser, or worse, opening each one individually and assessing. Yeah, I know, I am to blame, as I am an app hoarder and reluctant deleter.
[As an aside, and revealing how old I am, back on my SE/30 I had an app that let me insert a 3.5 in disk and would then produce a nice label listing all the files. Of course it didn’t tell me what they did, but it saved me a ton of time.]
TIA!
This is a prime use case for AI.
Copy the list of app names and put it in AI. Tell it to make you a spreadsheet of all the app’s uses.

Take a screenshot (or more) of your applications folder list view. Upload the pics to AI and ask for a doc listing the app along with it’s usage.

OMG…so embarrassed that I didn’t think of this and try it. I didn’t realize that AI can do OCR off the photo. I took a photo of my app names, told ai to describe what each does, and in literally 10 seconds had a formatted table with great results. In addition, it advised me which ones not to delete. Thanks so much for the prompt (and correct) answer. Appreciate it!

So … you are down how many from 300?

An other approach could have been: if you don’t remember what it does then you don’t need it and can (cautiously) delete it. Also, if the goal is cleaning up, you can go to your Applications folder, add the Date Last Opened column, sort by it, and delete apps you haven’t opened in years.

Now down to 192. Will keep culling. Many of them appeared to be free trials that expired. I should’ve had a folder for trial versions and had Hazel clean it out after 10 days.
My problem is that I’m impressionable and attracted to shiny new apps, and feel compelled to try them out. For example, I had 4 apps that were all designed to Bokeh my photos. Should’ve just picked one to use. Geez…
Thanks! Good thought. I used to be afraid to delete an app, lest I need it in the future (some don’t allow re-downloads). But I’ve reached the point that if I haven’t used an app after a year, odds are I never will. I guess I am becoming the Marie Kondo of apps.
This app might be helpful. Not sure where I heard about it. Maybe on this forum?
